ConEd Fire Affects Metropolitan Hospital

August 26, 2010 - East Harlem. A Consolidated Edison (Con Ed) transformer exploded this morning at East 96th Street and First Avenue and affected electrical power at Metropolitan Hospital Center which is located at East 99th Streets between Second and First Avenues. Community residents reported hearing an explosion at around 9:30 am. The explosion was followed by dark heavy smoke and the smell of burnt electrical equipment. The smoke having no place to go, traveled from 96th Street and exited an iron street level grate at First Avenue and 99th Street, three city blocks away.

East Harlem’s individuals, non-profits and business communities came together to plan and obtain the funding for this great East Harlem tradition, which is going on its 6th year.
