Johnny Colon

Whatever happened to Johnny Colon?
Is he still around, does he still run a music school?

He is around

Sorry for replying so late.
But Johnny is still around. I am not sure if he is still running the
music school or not. But I have heard that he is around. He is a great
gentelman. I hope to bump into him soon.

Jose

Update:
There is a sign at a storefront at East 111th Street which reads "East Harlem Music School". I hope it is Johnny's program. Its would be nice to have his school so close to my home.

The sign is between Third and Second Avenues on the 'odd' number side of the street. I am hoping the school does go there, as I need to limber up on my drumming. I have not played the drums (base, snare, high hats), since my 18th Birthday. (1973). Would love to practice before buying a set.

Johnny Colon

Johnny Colon is alive and well! He still lives in Spanish Harlem and still runs his music school.

He still performs in small clubs/bars, mostly "Frank Sinatra" type music...and I hear that he's super talented!

Johnny's also the President of UMF, United Musician's Front, an organization dedicated to exposing "payola", or radio stations that take money (a lot of it) under the table, from artists willing to pay an exhorbitant amount to have their music played over the radio. Usually, this music's lousy, i.e., Latin Pop music. Notice that you don't hear that good, "criollo" salsa music like Johnny Colon's?!
