Smile Long Gone But hopefully Not Forgotten...

I doubt anyone would know who I am but I was around when a block party in El Barrio was a great musical event. Stephanie Munoz would call me up and say be there!! Johnnie Colon would say to me glad you could make it....now hurry up and set up we start in a few minutes.

Yep...It's been 15 years since I left New York City and 19 years since I last performed with the Johnnie Colon Orquestra. I saw a recent picture of the band and JC still looks the same. It's amazing how he stays so young.....it must be the music.

Johnnie if you ever get to read this....and your memory has'nt faded as bad as mine...I started out as a corista when Ricky Gonzalez played the piano for you. Somebody snitched and told Donald the bass player I played bass. From there on I was one of the back up bass players being switched off and on with Ruben Rodriguez.

I shared the limelight with all the wonderful musical personalities the likes of Gilberto 'Pulpo' Colon, Charlie Palmieri, 'Professor' Joe Torrez, Jimmy Bosh, Louis Kahn, Steve Guttman, Robin Lobe and too many countless others worthy of mentioning who were my heros.

Thank you for giving that wild and well dressed trouble making kid from the Bronx an opportunity to serve the Latin music lovers of the world. I am proud to say that you led me and many other musicians to a positive path. Your speeches about opening the door to so much talent were true. And I testify to that.

I am happy to see that you and the school you founded continue to serve the community. And I hope that many more will follow the path you have guided them to as you did for me. Que Viva La Musica!!
