Moving to East Harlem...

Hello everyone!

We are a young couple planning on moving to 115th St. and 2nd Ave. in June. Although we love the apartment we've found, and are excited about the prospect of living together for the first time, we are feeling a little anxious because neither of us have ever lived in a neighborhood where we are the minority (white), and our impressions of Spanish Harlem and East Harlem come from horror stories of less fortunate times for the community. We are respectful, nice, tolerant, normal young people and are in no way racist. But we wonder if the neighborhood is safe for us. We do not want to be the cause of tension. And maybe we're just asking this because we've never experienced a multicultural neighborhood, and surely lots of white people live there with no problem, but we just want to ask if the area is generally safe (regardless of race). Are there things we should know or expect? Places we should avoid so as to avoid trouble? Are we totally missing the point? Should we be concerned at all?

Write us back! And thanks for reading this.

Hi, I don't think you really having anything to worry about. East Harlem is a great neighborhood thats got all kinds of people living within its borders. You'll certainly be in the minority but there is nothing wrong with that and the area seems pretty tolerant. Remember that everybody lives here from West Africans to Italians to Chinese to Mexicans, etc.
I've only been here a few months but my roomate has lived here for three years and has never had any problems. In terms of general safety, there has been an considerable effort over the last several years to improve the neighborhood and seems to have worked well. The police presence is considerable, which is always comforting.
Of course the neighborhoods not perfect but it sure beats many other neighborhoods in the city (like my last residence) and its a great place. I'd imagine the best way to get comfortable with the neighborhood would be to explore it as much as possible. There a lot of great places to find in East Harlem as well as the rest of Harlem.
Hope this calms the fears
take it easy
