Hey,
Why is this forum empty?
So much is going on politically in El Barrio (Spanish Harlem).
I guess I will start it off.
Should we vote for Phil Reed (West Sider) or a local
community activist, Mr. Felipe Luciano! I am going to
vote for Mr. Luciano. First of all, he is more representative
of the local community. Secondly, he is Hispanic, Puerto Rican
to be exact. Thirdly, he is not aloof. What do you think
gang?

MUADDIB,
Before I reply What do you know of Felipe Luciano?
I replied:
Diana,
I don't know as much as I'd like to know.
He was a Young Lord in the 70's.
He became a TV Journalist and still is.
I have heard other things about temperment, but
that is about it. I get into my activism too, so
I don't blame Felipe for having a temper now and then when
it comes to causes he believes in.
What do you know about Felipe?

Diana Lopez replied:
TEMPER???? Oh, I most definitely have one....
Yes, Felipe was a Young Lord...but, as told to me by other Lord members he doesn't not tell the story straight when it comes to the history of the Young Lord's Movement. That's why former Lord members are rather distant from him.
The others see him as a sell out...especially when he was with Ninfa Segarra (once Guilliani's Deputy Mayor, former political activist-independentista and now presently the Board of Ed's president.)
True, he's been with Fox 5 on and off and I hear it's because of serious reasons that he's away for a while.
I saw him once at a function - he was the M.C. and it left me with a bad taste..he made lewd remarks about Latina women and many women in the conference objected to it.
He is also involved in the Latino Musicians movement that I wrote about before.
I tend to agree with him on some of the issues concerning this movement.. I often have wondered why the so called activists from that era have not held true to the principles, convictions and beliefs that brought a whole group of people (namely Puerto Ricans) toegether.
Your thoughts...? ? ? ?
I replied:
Diana,
I guess we have heard about Felipe's statements and atitude
at the same event. Then it could have been another event.
From what I hear, he was at an event, and spoke more like
a street person (he got street) at an event where a lot of
upper class people were in the audience, thereby not endearing
himself to them. According to the account I heard, he really
let loose. Because of this, I am not sure about what to
make of him.
I did get to speak to him briefly at a recent local event, but
it was a very quick exchange. I hope to call him soon, if
East Harlem Online decides to host/sponsor the 2001 East Harlem
8th Councilmanic Candidates Debate (September).
Mee Ling (from Community School Board #4 called me recently)
and she is interested in running too. Do you know Mee Ling?
