Hello. Hey this message is for Patricia (Siffert) Rexroad who posted a message on Feb 14,2004. Yes, I had Mr. Siffert as a Social Studies and Homeroom teacher in the mid 80's at JHS 45. So have my sister, Lisa. I remembered he wore large shoes and highwater slacks but he rocked them well. He was the coolest teacher I had. I had some great teachers from high school and college but he was the best. In 84, his ninth graded homeroom class (9-304) gave him a hard way to go but all of us respected him. He was like the "hood Mr. Rogers." I am sorry to hear his passing. Some other memorable teachers were Mrs. Toppin, Mr. Brennan, Mrs. Rodriguez, Ms. Foster, Mrs. Ramos, Mr. Scamardella and Principal Bernstein. Go Eagles. I still have my 1984 Yearbook. Peace and Blessings to all who reads this message. marcus2405@hotmail.com

P.S. Hey Sean Johnson...where are you...email me.

I wish all the residents would team up and get rid of the Crips and the Bloods. I am afraid to go to school because of them and it hurts my studying. These gangs have no place in thje community. They also scare me in the park.

This is a wonderful surprise. My best friend of 48 years Debby Winston Blakes, sent this to me as a e-mail, and I was floored. I too grew up in the East River Houses, buliding 404 E.105th st, I have never stop thinking about all the people who I knew and loved, and often wonder how those I don't see or hear about are doing? There is no place in the world like East Harlem, and I miss home very much.
I now live in Poughkeepsie New York, and I can tell you this much, IT SURE AIN'T MANHATTAN, NOR IS IT LIKE SPANISH HARLEM. If any of my old friends see this message and wish to contact me please do. I went to PS168, JHS-99, and Julia Richman High school. Thanks debby for sending me this information, love you girl!

I was born and raised in East Harlem in Franklin Plaza. My parents were one of the original residents of that coop. I have volunteered as a tutor for the East Harlem Tutorial Program, working in Legal Aid, The Empowerment Zone and other East Harlem organizations. I have been living in the Bronx for the past 17 years but my heart will always be in El Barrio. I would like to thank Jose Rivera for providing the community with the highest level of service this community has seen.

Whoa...Im am so glad to see this site. I used to live in Wagner Projects(2405 1st Ave Apt 12C) from 1969-1990. My sister is Lisa and my mom is Ms. Mary. I went to school at P.S. 80, P.S. 112, P.S. 206, J.H.S. 45 then to Campus High School. I miss all the people that I grew up with like
Hector on the 2nd floor, Darrell and Popsi on the 11th Floor, the Wheelers and Fiqueroas on the 13th floor, Ms. Doll on the 12th. I also miss my friends on the other side of Wagner, especially Sean and Leslie. There are so many to mention but I do know,"them projects raised me right." I truly miss hearing basketball being played late night, May May's fried rice and definitely real Arroz con Pollo. Im down here in Maryland where everything is generic. I can't find true Puerto Rican food. Anyway I hope to hear from everyone I know. Peace to all. marcus2405@hotmail.com

Would like to say Hi to all who lived in Harlem. My relatives lived on the West side and I attended BFHS from 1963 to 1966. I was a Bronx girl attending a great High School. My guidence couselor was Mr. Goldberg. I don't remember when the school let the first females in but it had to be between 1960and 1962. Any one remember the Black out? I believe 1965? I walked all the way back to the Bronx. I am a Bronx girl but I have a great appreciation for Harlem and Benjamin Franklin HS. Was in the Honor Classes and feel that somehow I didn't get a chance to meet a lot of the other students. Had a lot of good people in the school none the less. Many Happy returns. In reference to Clark Pena hes going to do a great Job as district Leader. I have seen Clark in action and know hes going to do an outstanding job up in the city. Clarks a natural leader and is a take charge person...his job was taken from him as a hospital Police because he spent alot of time fighting for the rights of the patients and visitors to have a more safe and secure Hospital. In retaliation Mr. Pena lost his Job. To that guy thats throwing the cheap shots around about losing jobs...
I think you should do your research a little better next time. Clarks a great human being and he is going to do a great job if I know him...

Thanks for building this great web site. I taught English at Benjamin Franklin from 1962 through 1966 and lived in Franklin Plaza on E. 106th Street. I have recently retired after 42 years of teaching, the last 34 at SUNY Fredonia where I was Professor of English and for eight and a half years department chair. I still cherish my days at Franklin and would love to hear from my former students. For those who need a memory jog, my picture is on my web page, although the picture was taken three decades after I left BFHS. Has anyone seen Roberta Guaspari-Tzavaras's film Fiddlefest, about her East Harlem violin program, part of which was conducted at BFHS after it ceased to be BFHS? The film has several shots of the school and many of East Harlem. I also recommend Tom Webber's book Flying over 96th Street, which is about growing up in East Harlem.

It was with great pleasure that I read your article on Oscar Garcia Rivera and finding out that he is your first inductee, great honor to our family. Oscar Garcia Rivera was my grt uncle on my mother's side, I remember meeting him months before his death and what a great man he was. He was very close to my grandfather and they both had the opportunity of expending his last months together. Thank you again for your consideration to him.

Webmaster comments   Norma, it is he who honors us. I wish I could have met him and gotten to know him. More of the Puerto Rican community should of him and include him in the history of our people.

How can you say you love East Harlem..you are from Washington Heights! You did nothing for our community as an Assembly member except help ACORN bambozzle the hard working people of our community. Nelson..stop running already..people are tired of your lies.

I came across this site from a local newspaper here in Puerto Rico.I lived in the the Jefferson projects (2190 2nd Ave.) from 1957-1969. As I looked through your website a flood of memories came back to me: hot summers playing stickball and handball by PS 102, opening up the pumps and splashing everyone in the street, looking out for gangfights between the Untouchables(Puerto Rican) and the Redwings (Italian) and just hanging out on the block right across from PS 102 and a host of other memories. I am so glad to have found this site and to read what others remember of this experience.

Michael Rodriguez | thunderblade1976@hotmail.com
Hello. I would like to get in contact with former students of the JHS 45 in Manhattan NY.
I attended that school from my 7th grade (1988) until my 9th grade (1991).
Would love to find out what happened to the then 1991 "Rafael Cordero" (top 3rd fl Bilingual) Administrator, Nilda Rios. Also, of course... I would like to get in touch with certain teachers who taught on the 3rd fl. Who could forgert the flamboyant Ms. Ocasio, Mr.Torres, Mr. Lantigua, Mrs. Rubino. I am not sure but the class I was in was 9-12 or something? The homeroom teacher back at that time (90-91) was Mr.Lantigua. I wasn't much of a person that stood up, as I was always a semi shy kid. I was pals with Oscar Gonzales. I did have a crush on many girls from that floor but just can't think of any name that pops into mind. Also there was this girl from the lower 2nd or 1st floor by the name of "Blanca" Tirado, she sure got my attention whenever I saw her.
My name at that time was Jose Rodriguez, but I also go by Michael. Right now I work as a network engineer for a small company here in NYC, and currently Im living a normal life with no history of anything that would get people's attention, lol.
If anybody out there knows or has any knowledge of what I wrote here, then please send me an e-mail.
God bless. ;-)
