I recently had the opportunity of taking my 13 year old grandson on vacation to El Barrio, where I grew up. It was a memorable experience, showing him the sites where I still have fond memories of my early years, especially 107th Street and Lexington Ave.

Great site to share the old days, thanks Jose. I was born in Utah. Grew up in East Harlem 1953 and I lived 109th st. Park Madison, 1996 3rd ave, 2022 3rd ave, 429 E.117th bet. 1st & Pleasant ave and attended Ben.Franklin H S majored in music, to 201 E. 104th street.

worked at Washburn Wire, became a musician played with the Le'Bron Bro's, Ray Rodriguez, Cimarron, King Nando. I have four other brother's and one sister. Frank as Karate, Eddie the Cat, Harold Rivera politician, and David moved out to Cali, and Yvette, lives on 119th street and 2nd ave in my old apartment.

I go crazy every time I go down to the old neighborhood, becasue all you need do is watch the movie PoPi with Alan Atkin's filmed on 121st bewteen 2nd and 3rd ave to have a sense of how busy East Harlem was in 1969. All I can see and understand is that thousands of our people died of either drugs, AIDS, or old age, along with many of us who just moved on.

moved when my older brother Eddie died in 1988, and just couldn't live there without him around. Our mother also took it very badly and moved back to PR.
But, East Harlem was a great place to have grown up, and we all had our choices as to how we were going to end up in life, many did not make it. I was known as Mr. Latin Soul when I played with the bands back then, from the Psycho Room, The Che-Jose, Broadway Casino, Chico's East, La Mancha, La Maganet, Saint George Hotel, Hunt's Point Palace where I played my first gig with the Le'Bron Brother's, Riverside Hotel, Casa Blanca, The Cheetah, Apollo theater, Grand Paradise, Happy Hills Casino, Knickerbocker Ballroom, Brooklyn Casino.

If you lived near 117th street and remember me, get in touch with me and I'll send you the link to my Homepage. I plan to move back to East Harlem if I can find a nice place to settle and start the salsa band. Los Salseros Del Barrio. Hope to hear from some of you,

Anyone out there remember the Gonzalez Family from Carver Projects on 99th Street between Park and Madison. My brothers Louie and Tito. Tito use to play with Joe Bataan back when I was a young girl. I grew up Lizzy Gonzalez and lived in the projects till I left when I went away to college in 1978. Both my mom, Carmen, and my dad, Quiso, passed away. Just wondering if anyone out there remembers them. I remember the parties on Friday and Saturdays at my parents house. I went to St. Francis De Sales. I was born in Mt. Sinai, I remember Mets supermarket, buyin coquito on the streets, the hot dog stands, wow it's been years!

East Harlem was a wonderful place to grow up. Unfortunetly "El Barrio" is not the same, it does not have the smell it once had, the music, nor the people. I will never forget where my second home was besides Humacao.,PR- 118th 2nd ave.

hello, I use to live at 350 East 124th street. I remember hanging out in the park with my friends, go to friends homes, and calling out my friends from downstairs and they would look out the window to see who is calling them. Playing baseball at the artificial field. ah, good times. The worst time was when my dad passed away 1984. The saddest day of my life, people who knew my dad would tell me things i never knew he did. They said he was kind, caring, and always helped any one in need.

This message is for David Bones. David I don't know if you remember me, we never really were tight friends, kinda of more hung out with the same group of friends, anyway I lived in the buidling in front of you, 350 as a matter of fact, in Wagner. Your brother Hector (r.i.p) was best friends with one of my old friends HARRY (sister's Wanda and Myrna). I remember the house parties at your place. In fact there was this guy name Shorty my friend used to like that wasn't exactly short, he was like 6'4", or something like that. Everytime I hear "It's a love thing" by the Whispers it reminds of my friend Linda dancing with Shorty in your house. I loved the wagner projects, I really have some wonderful memories of it and still recall a lot of my old friends that have unfortunately faded away. By the way I went to PS80. JRHS45, and I graduated from Julia Richman in 1975 (gosh did I really graduated that long ago OUCH!)

This seems to be a great site, and an emotional one too - our history from a "Magical Place." I was born in 1958 (Mount Sinai) and grew up in the Washington projects at 1809 3rd Ave #5H and 219 E 97th St #9C from birth through my mid 20s. I went to PS 109, JHS 99, Julia Richmond ('76), Boro of Man. Comm. Coll. (AA), Hunter College (BA), and City College of NY School of Eng. (MS). I left in June '87 and continue to visit "home" about once every two months. I use to hang out at 102nd street across the enrance from the 23 precinet WHILE it was under construction (it took years to finish that place - funding issues).

I am the youngest of four. My brother still goes by East Harlem and lives in Queens.

Even though I've traveled all over Europe and the US, I am ALWAYS a East Harlemnite!! It made me who I am today.and somehow I survived!

To all Benjamin Franklin HS alumni who attended between 1967-1970, there is a semi-formal reunion being planned for May, 2008 in NYC. I too grew up in El Barrio, 106th & First, 50's thru mid 60's and am proud to have spent my youth there. There was a grocery store on First bet. 105 & 106, and in the cool summer days, we'd sit in front while eating Nancy's pizza and listening to the guys singing doo wop on the corner. I'd save my pennies and go over to candy store on the corner of 105th & First and buy candy cigarettes and Bazooka bubble gum and when I got a little older, I'd head over to the other candy store on First bet. 104 & 105 and buy 16 Magazine. Oh, I could go on and on.Thank you, Jose; your love shines through on every page of memories here.
